658: Jamaica’s New Area Code

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) supplied the first block of 10,000 numbers under the 658 numbering plan area code in May 2023. Introduced in 2018, the 658 area code will add millions of numbers to the available pool and prevent the resources from being depleted.

The Internet of Things

The growing reliance on communication technology devices such as landlines, smartphones, portable modems, tablets, smart watches, even point-of-sale terminals and vehicle tracking devices can potentially exhaust the available number resources. Many devices now depend on a network of connections to exchange data, and this communication is often facilitated by a subscriber identity module (SIM) card, a mobile number and packet data service.

Dialing Format

The seven digits following the numbering plan area code may exist under both 876 and 658.

The correct 10-digit dialing format must be maintained and to ensure calls are routed correctly.
